The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is a renowned heritage railway in North Yorkshire, England, running through the scenic North York Moors National Park. Originally conceived by George Stephenson as the Whitby and Pickering Railway in 1831 and opened in 1836 to foster trade, a section of the line closed in 1965. However, the route between Grosmont and Pickering was successfully reopened in 1973 by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd.

Now operating as a major tourist attraction, the 24-mile (39 km) line has earned numerous industry awards.

Owned and operated by a charitable trust, the railway is supported by full-time staff, seasonal employees, and many dedicated volunteers. As of 2020, the NYMR holds the distinction of being the UK's most popular heritage railway.

Job Description:

This is a fantastic chance to earn while you learn and launch a career in rail engineering. Working alongside our experienced engineers and technicians, you will help to maintain, examine, repair and overhaul the railway’s signalling and telecommunication systems. Over approximately three years you will gain nationally recognised qualifications and the practical skills to become a competent rail engineering technician – all while playing a hands-on part in preserving the nation’s railway heritage.

 

During this 3.5-year apprenticeship programme you will learn a range of engineering skills by working on and receiving workplace-based training. You will also receive formal training and be supported to obtain a nationally recognised qualification through our training provider Derwent Training.

Key Responsibilities

Duties will be undertaken under appropriate supervision and will increase in complexity and
independence as competence develops:

• Carry out maintenance, examination, fault-finding and repair tasks on our Signalling
and Telecommunications Department under the guidance of qualified staff
• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and some workshop equipment
• Interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, specifications and maintenance
documentation
• Complete job and quality records accurately and maintain information systems
• Apply company processes, procedures and quality standards in all work
• Comply with all statutory, organisational and health, safety and environmental
requirements
• Identify, report and help rectify defects, hazards and opportunities for improvement
• Compile and maintain a portfolio of evidence of occupational and professional
competence
• Attend all off-the-job training and complete coursework, assessments and
qualifications on time
• Participate fully in the End-Point Assessment process (portfolio, occupational
competence validation interview / viva, and EngTech professional review)
• Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and stage of training

Qualifications Required:
  • 4 GCSE’s Grade 4 including Mathematics, English & a Science.

  • Experience of general engineering, workshop, or related trades.
  • First Aid at Work Certificate a bonus.
Qualifications Gained(upon completion):

Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard (Mechatronics Maintenance) include the a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
