Job Description:

As a Multi‑Skilled Engineering Apprentice at C&D Foods, you will train to support the site’s engineering function across electrical and mechanical disciplines within a high‑volume food manufacturing environment. You will assist in the correction, prevention, and elimination of technical problems to ensure the factory operates safely, efficiently, and in line with C&D Foods’ quality, hygiene, and performance standards.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will work alongside experienced engineers to help maintain reliable production processes, support continuous improvement, and ensure that business targets for safety, quality, delivery, and cost are consistently met.

 

You will learn how to and be involved with:

Engineering & Maintenance Support

  • Assist in providing electrical and mechanical engineering support across production and site utilities.
  • Support fault‑finding and breakdown response to minimise downtime and maintain production output.
  • Help identify root causes of equipment failures and contribute to long‑term corrective actions.

Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)

  • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) tasks under supervision.
  • Gain practical experience working on:
    • Electrical systems
    • Mechanical equipment
    • Pneumatic systems
    • Hydraulic systems
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are completed to C&D Foods’ safety, quality, and hygiene standards.

Projects & Continuous Improvement

  • Support senior engineers with improvement activities and reliability projects.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of small engineering projects, developing project and organisational skills.
  • Contribute ideas to improve equipment performance, energy efficiency, and plant reliability.

Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibility

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental policies, including permit‑to‑work and lock‑out/tag‑out procedures.
  • Work safely at all times and actively promote a strong safety culture across the site.
  • Report hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.

Apprenticeship Training & Development

  • Complete the requirements of the UK Engineering Apprenticeship Standard, including off‑the‑job training, at Derwent Training association, Malton.
  • Build competence in both mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.
  • Work toward relevant industry qualifications and End‑Point Assessment (EPA).
  • Demonstrate continuous learning, professionalism, and progression toward becoming a fully qualified Multi‑Skilled Engineer within C&D Foods.
Qualifications Required:

All applicants must have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSEs (9-4 / A*-C) including English and Maths. A Science GSCE is desirable as one of the four.

  • Curiosity and Enthusiasm: A keen interest in learning new skills and understanding the "how" behind the machinery and the feed mill processes.
  • Resilience: The ability to learn from mistakes and accept feedback constructively. You are physically and mentally tough, capable of maintaining focus in noisy, dusty, and high-pressure industrial settings.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable learning new technologies and processes. You are a hands-on worker who is happy to pivot between different manual tasks as the mill's daily demands change.
Skills Required:
  • Logical Problem-Solving: Able to think on your feet to find practical solutions to technical or operational challenges.
  • Attention to Detail: Works with high accuracy and follows strict instructions/safety protocols, which is essential in a fast-paced manufacturing site.
  • Technical Learning: The ability to quickly grasp and apply new manufacturing processes and industrial technologies.
Qualifications Gained(upon completion):

Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard (Mechatronics Maintenance) include the a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

Upon completing your apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to undertake a full time engineering position within the team. Further on, you will have option of going for further training both in house and externally with the view to progress your career within the business and beyond.
