The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is a renowned heritage railway in North Yorkshire, England, running through the scenic North York Moors National Park. Originally conceived by George Stephenson as the Whitby and Pickering Railway in 1831 and opened in 1836 to foster trade, a section of the line closed in 1965. However, the route between Grosmont and Pickering was successfully reopened in 1973 by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd.

Now operating as a major tourist attraction, the 24-mile (39 km) line has earned numerous industry awards.

Owned and operated by a charitable trust, the railway is supported by full-time staff, seasonal employees, and many dedicated volunteers. As of 2020, the NYMR holds the distinction of being the UK's most popular heritage railway.

Job Description:

North Yorkshire Moors Railway are seeking a proactive IT Support Technician Apprentice to serve as the primary point of contact for technical assistance across the organization. Delivered via the Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship Standard, this role blends hands-on IT support with fundamental administrative and project management principles, allowing you to build real-world experience while working toward a recognized qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for staff and volunteers, triaging and resolving everyday technical tickets promptly.

  • Provide responsive remote assistance via TeamViewer and hands-on, on-site support across all organizational locations.

  • Support technical needs in retail outlets, booking offices, and tea rooms, escalating 2nd-line issues to external EPOS vendors as needed.

  • Set up, configure, deploy, and maintain Windows 11 devices and laptops, managing updates and user migrations.

  • Manage Active Directory accounts, including user provisioning, password resets, and two-factor authentication (2FA) support.

  • Administer Microsoft 365 services (Outlook, Teams, Exchange) alongside mail filtering systems.

  • Maintain and support user access for SharePoint and OneDrive.

  • Support and configure company iOS devices (iPhones/iPads) for email, 2FA, and general service needs.

  • Troubleshoot everyday issues with desktop hardware, printing, Wi-Fi, peripherals, and OWL video conferencing setups.

  • Maintain IP CCTV connections and assist key stakeholders in retrieving critical safety-related footage.

  • Keep accurate inventory records for IT assets, equipment distribution, and service desk activity.

  • Apply Level 3 Business Administrator project management principles to help scope, plan, and deliver small IT projects.

Qualifications Required:
  • 4 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above, including Mathematics, English & a Science. (if not held, full support will be given to complete Functional Skills in English and/or Maths as part of the apprenticeship).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, well organised with strong attention to detail, and the confidence to interact with people at all levels.
  • A genuine commitment to completing the 14-month apprenticeship and End-Point Assessment, including the off-the-job training requirement.

Desirable (Experience, qualifications, skills, knowledge & personal qualities)

  • Experience of office administration, customer service or working as part of a team (paid or voluntary).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications and an interest in the NYMR and its heritage.

  • Administrative Capability: Practical capability in general admin tasks (prior experience in admin, customer service, or volunteering is a bonus).
  • Organization & Task Management: Ability to stay well-organized and work systematically.
