Ambassadors For Circular & Norton

Derwent Training is a Circular Malton and Norton Champion in an effort to support Malton and Norton becoming Yorkshire’s first circular market town.

Chief Executive Officer, Claire Gavaghan said this of the initiative: ‘’Reducing the volume of waste reaching the end of its lifecycle is important to all our futures. Businesses need to have conversations about how we can collaborate locally and have a positive impact on our town. I see being part of this project as a way of supporting Malton and Norton to develop a circular economy and I am pleased to say that Derwent Training is a Circular Malton and Norton Champion.’’

What is a Circular Economy?

The world’s traditional linear economy is based on ‘take, make and dispose’ but this is creating huge amounts of waste and we are running out of natural resources. It has led to unintended consequences that is not sustainable.

A Circular Economy is an economic system aimed at minimising waste and making the most of resources. In a circular system, resource input and waste, emissions and energy leakage are minimised through long-lasting design, maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing and recycling. It is achieved through collaboration and applying new solutions. Businesses can take the first steps by turning waste streams into profit streams.

Circular Malton and Norton state that by embracing a Circular Economy approach, our town and indeed every town can achieve outcomes such as:

  • Zero waste
  • Cleaner air
  • Less plastic
  • New business
  • Skilled jobs

What changes will be made?

  • Businesses and people in our town will collaborate and inspire others
  • Our food and bio waste will be used to fuel our own energy, heating and transport with a community anaerobic digester
  • Provide sculptured water drinking fountains to refill bottles and refillable water bottles for children.
  • Provide more electric vehicle charging points close by
  • Sharing business stories of local success; supporting other initiatives by people and our Council that gives us more ways to play our part to overcome climate change
