Job Description:

As an Apprentice Electronics Engineer at YPS, you will play a key role in the production and testing of high voltage and precision electronic components used in cutting-edge scientific instruments. This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, practically minded, and enthusiastic about electronics.

Day-to-day duties will include:

  • Assembling and testing high voltage and electronic equipment to design specifications.
  • Following clean assembly protocols for precision parts and components.
  • Completing test sheets and maintaining accurate production records.
  • Supporting the production of advanced subassemblies, including high voltage cables, plugs, and electron sources.
  • Assisting with technical troubleshooting and providing feedback on test results.
  • As you progress, you will be supported in developing further capabilities including: Diagnosing product failures to component level, Recommending process improvements and Interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
Qualifications Required:

Applicants should have achieved (or be predicted to achieve) a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 5 (B) or above, including English, Maths, and Science (preferably Physics).

Additional qualifications or experience in Design & Technology, Computer Science, or Electronics will be viewed favourably.

Personal Qualities:
  • A demonstrable interest in engineering or hands-on technical work is essential.
  • Strong interest in electronics and a desire to develop hands-on technical skills.
  • Logical approach to problem-solving, particularly in diagnosing electronic faults.
  • Self-motivated, with the discipline to work both independently and as part of a highly specialised team.
  • Keen attention to detail, especially in handling sensitive electronic components.
Skills Required:
  • Ability to follow circuit diagrams, wiring schedules, and assembly instructions.
  • Competent in using basic hand tools, test instruments, and soldering equipment.
  • Good planning and organisation skills to manage multiple assemblies or tests.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for technical reporting and team collaboration.
  • Familiarity with basic Microsoft Word and intermediate Excel, especially for recording test data and producing technical logs.
  • This role involves working in a technical production environment with fine, precision components. It may require extended periods of standing and concentration. Clean handling of sensitive parts is critical.
Qualifications Gained(upon completion):

Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Standard (Which contains the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering)
