Exploring Engineering Event

DTA's new Exploring Engineering Event was held on Wednesday 16th May to celebrate 30 years in training and the Government's scheme of 2018 being announced as the Year of Engineering.

The evening allowed visitors to find out about the various types of engineering DTA offer apprenticeships in: Electrical and Electronics by wiring, starting and slowing down motors as well as using robotics, visitors could also experience mechanical manufacture with Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) which allowed them to control and programme a machine using a computer as well as the design side of manufacturing by having a look at Computer Aided Design (CAD) to see how products in a factory are designed from a specification. The activity in the Fabrication and Welding bay was also very popular using STEM to create fire with a welder and experience what it's like to be a welder on the welding simulator.

Past and current apprentices were available for a Q&A session and gave presentations on their experience of going down the apprenticeship route; Adam Freer from Ellis Patents who completed in 2014 and went into full-employment, Natasha Pitts of Dale Power Solutions who has progressed through the apprenticeship routes to complete her degree, Samantha Magowan also from Dale Power Solutions who is on the Higher Apprenticeship with DTA and Jordan Layne who is on the Advanced Apprenticeship programme. All the apprentices did a fantastic job speaking about their experiences as well as showing the visitors and their parents what a great route into careers apprenticeships are and answered any questions the attendees to the presentation had.

Feedback on the event was positive and all said that they found the activities useful to see what the different types of engineering were and listening to the apprentices opened their eyes on the different options out there to start their careers.

DTA would like to thank the apprentices for their support on the evening.

If you would like to apply for an apprenticeship for a 2018 start, it isn't too late - complete an application form here and we'll be in touch.
