Engineering the next generation

Derwent Training Association are pleased to welcome all new apprentice starts to the training centre during September.

Chief Executive Officer, Claire Gavaghan said this: ''I am delighted to welcome the new engineering apprentices who are starting with Derwent Training. The region and country must keep investing in skills. Derwent Training, together with local employers, will ensure these young people get the very best education and training to help them in their new careers.'' Some of the new starts are photographed above with Claire, and Quality Manager Gary Simm.

With a shortage of skilled engineers across the region, we are excited to start working in partnership with six new employers who have chosen Derwent Training to train their next generation of engineers.

Derwent Training have continued training throughout the Covid pandemic with remote learning, and all apprentices continue to make progress. The centre is now working with reduced attendance and smaller class sizes, including new starts, to keep learners and staff safe.

The government has introduced incentive payments for hiring a new apprentice to help organisations offer new apprenticeships.

Employers who hire a new apprentice between 1st August 2020 an 31st January 2021 can apply for:
• £2,000 for each new apprentice aged 16 to 24
• £1,500 for each new apprentice 25 and over.

You will receive an additional £1,000 for recruiting a 16-18 year old apprentice.

You can apply for the payment from 1st September 2020, after you add new apprentices to your apprenticeship service account. The first payments will be made from January 2021 and will be paid directly into the employer’s bank account.

We are still working with employers to recruit new apprentices into their business, please contact Business Development Officer, Lauren Heslington on lauren.heslington@derwenttraining if you are considering recruiting an apprentice.
